Functions of the Department
The main functions of Excise and Prohibition Department is now shifted from revenue collection and regulatory role to enforcement of the NLTP Act’89 and NDPS Act’85 in the State. Therefore, the Department’s duties are mainly focused on preventive measures, and control of possession, sale, consumption, manufacture and Transportation of liquor and smuggling of excisable goods and other narcotic drugs in the State. The Department also facilate in procuring and supply of Opium to recognized/registered users, regulates Denatured Sprit for industrial purpose, control of Molasses and also to co-ordinate with Central Agencies like NCB & Central
The Department also controls and regulates the import, export and issue of liquor to Military and Para Military Units through Canteen Stores Depot and Para Military Bonded Warehouses located at Dimapur.

NARCOTIC ENFORCEMENT UNDER THE NARCOTIC DRUGS AND PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES ACT 1985:
The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 came into force with effect from November 1985. Under this Act; cultivation, possession, carriage, transport, import and export of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances are prohibited. The Excise Department is one of the enforcing agencies duly authorized to enforce NDPS Act 1985 in the State.
